Dr. Jean Cheng is a Clinical Psychologist who attained the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) scholarship to complete both her PhD and Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She is registered with the Singapore Register of Psychologist (SRP) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). She is an approved supervisor by the SRP and a member of both the Singapore Psychological Society (SPS) and the Australian Psychological Society (APS).

Since her adolescent years, Jean has been passionate about alleviating human suffering and helping others – and herself – experience freedom from the inner prisons that limit one from living life to the fullest. Recognising that everyone carries their own personalised recipe of biochemistry, personality, psychology, and history, Jean provides individually-tailored therapy, where she draws on her training in a range of therapeutic modalities including Schema Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Experiencing (SE), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Dialectical behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Based Therapy, Mindfulness Based Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Therapy. She also remains invested in her lifelong professional growth and keeps up with current evidence-based treatments, attends courses, workshops, and engages in her own supervision.

In addition to professional growth, Jean is fiercely committed to her personal growth and does her own therapeutic work. She knows that we can only meet the depth of others’ humanity when we are able to meet the depth of our own. It is from this privileged space of regularly sitting on both the therapist and the client’s seats, that Jean beholds and honours her clients. She sees every human being as sacred, precious, special, irreplaceable, dignified, and worthy of love. Following this, Jean’s therapy style is non-judgemental, compassionate, respectful, collaborative, warm, and safe.

Jean has experience working in private practice, acute hospital and community mental health settings in both Singapore and Australia. Besides providing individual and group therapy, Jean remains widely involved in improving access and competency of mental health treatment within the community through writing publications and delivering trainings for doctors, nurses, counsellors, social workers, and case workers. She has previously taught at the University of Melbourne (Australia) and James Cook University (Singapore).

She has also presented her research in Copenhagen at the 2013 Annual Conference for the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders Congress (ISSPD) and in Singapore at the 2015 Eastern Health Alliance Scientific Meeting. She writes and owns the social media accounts @jeanpsychologist on Instagram and Facebook and has also been interviewed and featured in various Media outlets.

Jean has lived in Melbourne (Australia) for 10 years and New York (United States of America) for a year. She is experienced with family and culture specific challenges faced by both Singaporean and expatriate populations.

Apart from her passion in psychology, Jean spends her time with her children, reading, writing, swimming slowly, singing, drinking coffee, chai latte or teh-c-siu-dai, eating pandan chiffon cakes, and falling in love with shows showcasing strong inclusivity and humanity themes such as, ‘This is Us’ and ‘Sex Education’, as well as enjoying classic light-hearted TV series like ‘Friends’ and ‘Cobra Kai’.
